Popeye Pedal Bike Ride

  • St. Nicholas Landmark (map)

The first Popeye Pedal will be held on Sunday, September 8th at 10 AM, starting from the parking lot of the St. Nicholas Landmark in Chester, IL. Two courses will be offered. The first, suitable for cyclists of almost any ability level, will be a 12 mile course to the Pierre Menard Home and back. The second, for seasoned cyclists only, is a beautiful and challenging 52 mile course with 2100 feet of climbing that winds through the northwestern side of Randolph County, along the bluffs and river bottoms, before returning back to the Landmark.

Please note, the course is on low traffic, but public roads. Very young riders or riders not comfortable with riding alongside other vehicles should not participate. There will be some limited support available on the 12 mile ride, but riders on the 52 mile course should consider this event “self supported” and come prepared to deal with any issues you might experience on the road.

There is no charge for the event this inaugural year, but all participants must sign a waiver and wear a helmet. All participants who complete the ride will receive a $5 credit for food or beverage at the Landmark which must be used that day. Several door prizes will also be awarded.

Registrations will be available at the Landmark, online, and at the Landmark on the morning of the 8th. The Popeye Pedal is part of the annual Popeye Picnic in Chester, the home of the creator of Popeye, which begins Friday, September 6th. https://www.popeyepicnic.com/
